The 5 Best Custom Home Builders in Fairfax, California

4 Min Read

Located in Marin County, Fairfax is best known for being a peaceful community in a forest setting. The community provides its homeowners with outstanding recreational facilities: horse stables, riding, and various clubs.

The town is also known for its picturesque mountain views and plentiful parks. Our editorial team decided to showcase five of the best custom home builders in the area. Our firm chose them based on their various backgrounds and stellar portfolios.

Kerr Construction, Inc.

15 Woodland Ave. Suite F, San Rafael, CA 94901

Established in 1983, Kerr Construction specializes in both residential custom home construction and remodeling. The firm has been noted for its competitive pricing and hands-on processes. Kerr takes on projects regardless of size or scale and has secured a solid reputation for its expert designs and impressive craftsmanship. It has been the proud recipient of many awards and has also been featured extensively in numerous publications. Some of these noteworthy accomplishments include American Bungalow, Architectural Record, Better Homes & Gardens, San Francisco magazine, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Featured here is a Kerr Construction home in Nicasio. The Craftsman-style lodge was featured in American Bungalow. Our editorial team loved its angular shingled roofs and its large windows. We also enjoyed the unique fixtures and the custom wood finishes.

Singlepoint Design Build

200 Gate 5 Rd. Suite #109, Sausalito, CA 94965

Operating out of its office in Sausalito, Singlepoint has been in business since 2010. It is regarded as one of Marin County’s premier builders and specializes in complete home remodels and ground-up construction work. It is operated by a talented team of professionals who each have experience in every design and construction process phase. It has also secured relationships with some of the area’s best subcontractors—providers known for their excellent plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and roofing services. The company’s founder, Brant Hill, holds a degree in Construction Management from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He first gained experience working for a large commercial general contractor as a project manager. That extensive experience still reflects itself in the firm’s work today. The company maintains affiliations with important organizations like the Marin Builders Association.

Completed in 2015, the modern farmhouse above showcases the firm’s talent and expertise. For this project, the firm’s team employed its great design-build approach and collaborated with Thompson Studio Architects. Our editorial team especially loved its indoor-outdoor living spaces.

Floyd Construction Inc.

714 C St. #207, San Rafael, CA 94901

Floyd Construction has been serving the entirety of Marin and other surrounding areas since 1978. Joe Floyd founded the firm in Santa Barbara before relocating to Marin County. The firm has since evolved from a regular-sized firm specializing in select services into the firm it is today, capable of taking on projects regardless of size and working on high-end luxury custom homes. Aside from its residential work, the firm has also taken on several commercial and landscaping projects. The firm is highly experienced and composed of some of the best professionals in the greater Bay area. Before establishing the firm, Joe Floyd gained experience working with a well-known engineering firm. That experience provided him with many skills that continue to influence the company’s work.

The new home construction above was completed in collaboration with Carol Knorpp and Kerry Bogardus. It is located in a great community in Larkspur and was specifically designed for a family of four. The project challenged the firm with the deconstruction of the original structure down to its foundation. The firm upgraded the perimeter foundation as well as new storage space under the project. Our editorial team loved its Fleetwood exterior pocket doors and clean trimless interior lines.

Salamandra Associates

39 Aquinas Drive, San Rafael, CA 94901

Founded in 1988, Salamandra Associates operates out of its office in San Rafael and provides clients with a comprehensive range of services. It started as a commercial firm, completing spaces for United Airlines, Cambridge Sound Works, and other East Bay companies. The firm assists homeowners throughout the entire process, in addition to the smallest of details. It begins its process with accurate budget analyses and significant estimates. Doing so assures homeowners that the firm will not exceed the agreed-upon budget. The firm also conducts site assessments, works out schedules, and helps with permits. Salamandra maintains affiliations with organizations like Build It Green and the Marin Builders Association, allowing it to stay current with the latest techniques.

This is a lovely home nestled in a cove on the East Coast of Tiburon. With a private beach and bay view this home was completely remodeled and expanded to create a bungalow/modern home that serves as a roomy homestead for a growing family. The home centers around the modern kitchen and radiates to play rooms, offices, Master suite and craftsman styled living room. The landscaping transforms this home into an extraordinary park-like environment.

Hadley Construction

85 Beach Rd., Belvedere, CA 94920

Serving the entire Bay Area—including San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, and Marin—Hadley Construction has been in business since 1950. The firm is now on its third generation of builders. Ever since its inception, the firm has been respected for its old-world craft. The firm has worked on over 300 new custom homes as well as countless major remodels. It makes use of the latest techniques and technology. The firm bolsters its efforts through cloud-based project management software that allows homeowners easy access to their project’s team and brief overviews of important documents and updates. The firm has also been praised for its transparent pricing and its open-book policy. The firm infuses various green building designs into its projects, techniques that have enabled these homes to have improved life spans as well as reduced energy and water use.

The contemporary project above offers its owners sweeping views of the nearby Stinson Beach. It features its own guest home, tranquil spa, and garden in the front courtyard. The firm was also tasked with the extra challenge of meeting stringent FEMA requirements. Our editorial team’s favorite aspect of this home was the spiral staircase designed by Sutton Suzuki Architects.
