The Best Modern Home Builders in the US

52 Min Read

Last updated on May 27th, 2024 at 01:45 pm

First popularized during the decades between the 1920s and the 1970s, modern homes are often characterized by their flat roofs, minimal designs, and large glass walls. This architectural style was born in response to the over-the-top architecture of previous decades: modernist architects preferred simplicity. Homes with strong horizontal composition, large open floor plans, and cinematic asymmetry gradually became far more prevalent. Today, these homes can also be crafted with sustainable building practices and are often more energy-efficient.

We’ve compiled 50 contractors throughout the entire country, representing the best modern home builders in each state. These contractors were chosen based on merit, work history, affiliations, and previous projects. Several of these firms offer unique services and incorporate innovative solutions into their designs that they offer exclusively.

If you are thinking about building a modern home, we recommend checking each builder’s license with the local licensing board, speaking to past clients, and using our bidding system to get competitive quotes from at least 3 contractors. Getting multiple bids is the best way to ensure you get a fair price and that bids include the complete scope of work.

Bensonwood homes are noted for their sustainable qualities and their incorporation of classic New England timber-framed architecture. Its team uses what it calls a “whole-house approach;” it handles a project throughout its entire duration from design to moving in. The firm was founded in 1974 after its principal, Tedd Benson, became intrigued by the area’s handcrafted and heavy timber made homes. He became enthralled by these structures and wanted to revive the craft with a more contemporary touch. The resulting portfolio has garnered the attention and eventual collaboration of several of the industry’s best architectural firms.
